Dancing is growing in Switzerland — and getting harder to run
More people dance here every year, and more of them book with private studios rather than clubs. That is the opportunity. The hard part is everything that happens after the first class.
Is dance actually growing?
Yes. 11.4% of the Swiss population aged 15 and over dances — up 3.5 percentage points in six years, one of the strongest gains of any sport.
Sport Schweiz 2020 surveyed more than 12,000 people. Dancing reached 11.4% of the resident population aged 15+ (from 7.9% in 2014); 72% of dancers are women and the average age is 46. Only strength training and yoga/Pilates grew faster.Sport Schweiz 2020 (BASPO, BFS, SUVA, bfu) — table T 6.1
A growing market rewards whoever is easiest to find and easiest to book. Your Ocio site is built for search engines and AI assistants, and every course, class date and teacher has its own page.
Are students moving to private studios?
They already have. 13% of the population now trains with a private provider such as a dance studio or yoga school, outside clubs and gyms.
The same federal study reports the shift away from clubs and fitness centres toward private providers, naming dance studios and yoga schools as the example — with women taking part markedly more often than men.Sport Schweiz 2020 (BASPO, BFS, SUVA, bfu) — section 10.4
That is your market — but it is crowded: over 560 dance schools and dance professionals present around 160 styles in Switzerland. On an aggregator you sit in that list next to all of them. On Ocio students book on your domain, under your name.
Where does a dance school lose money?
After the sale: students who quietly stop coming, and spots left empty because nobody was reminded or re-offered.
Published research from adjacent sectors sizes the problem: annual member retention averages 66.4% across 175 fitness companies and 17,000+ facilities, and in a study of outpatient appointments no-shows ran at 23.1% with no reminder versus 17.3% with an automated one.HFA 2025 Benchmarking Report; Parikh et al., Am J Med 2010
Ocio confirms every booking, reminds before the class, releases cancellations to the waitlist, nudges a pass that is running out and follows up when someone drifts — automatically, in your name.
Swiss participation figures are from Sport Schweiz 2020, the federal survey of more than 12,000 residents. Retention and no-show figures come from the fitness industry and outpatient care — the closest measured evidence we know of; they describe the problem, not a promise about your school.
